Background

Under the Local Government Act 1999, councils are required to promote their area and to provide an attractive climate and locations for the development of business, commerce, industry and tourism.

In most cases economic development outcomes are facilitated through partnerships with higher levels of government, business and the community.

The City of Victor Harbor provides a number of direct and indirect functions to support economic development outcomes, these can include town planning, infrastructure development, business services, festivals and events, and visitor services.

To assist Council to deliver the best economic development outcomes for the community, it has prepared a strategy to provide a clearly defined strategic direction. This will assist with a coordinated approach to growing our local economy and attracting investment that leads to local job creation.

    Economic Development Strategy Discussion Paper

To assist in gathering the community’s feedback, Council has developed a discussion paper that provides an overview of the local economy and proposes a framework for the four year Economic Development Strategy.

The preliminary strategy outlined within the discussion paper proposes a vision for a thriving economy that creates opportunity and lifestyle. It also sets out a number of objectives and strategies that aim to help achieve the vision.

    The key objectives include:

    1.  Competitive environment for business growth

    2.  Culture of innovation, creativity and collaboration

    3.  Attract investment that expands the economy

    4.  Develop the visitor economy

    5.  A strong sense of place reflected through the built and natural environment

Further detail is provided within the draft Economic Development Strategy discussion paper.
