Why do we need an Environmental Management Plan?

The Environmental Management Plan will include information about how we manage:

    ·  waterways

    ·  land in agricultural, fringe and urban areas

    ·  the coast

    ·  native vegetation

    ·  waste, and

    ·  climate change.

By having your say, the plan can build on and work with the community’s strengths, priorities and opportunities.

There are lots of different groups involved in protecting the environment – not just Council – and if they are not all on the same page it’s hard to get things right. This is where the Environmental Management Plan plays an important role.

How can I find out more about the current state of our local environment?

The City of Victor Harbor area is home to many wonderful assets such as Rosetta Head (The Bluff), Granite Island and the Little Penguin colony, Hindmarsh Falls, Glacier Rock at Inman Valley, and facilities that showcase them such as the Encounter Bikeway.

There are a number of challenges that face us both locally and globally. Our current way of life is not sustainable – we are consuming more water, non-renewable energy and materials than the planet can provide in the future.

Increasing urban growth places pressure on natural resources through more traffic, waste and use of our resources, unless the growth is carefully managed.

It’s also important that we prepare for the predicted local impacts of climate change. How we design and where we build our infrastructure, houses and streets is critical to future adaptation.

To set the scene, and assist you to provide feedback, a State of the Environment Report has been drafted. You can download a copy from this website, or collect a hard copy from the Council Office (1 Bay Road, Victor Harbor).
