What is Open Space?

Open space is publicly owned land that is open for public access and recreation, including activities like:

    • Walking, running and cycling

    • Nature appreciation

    • Social activities (i.e. picnic facilities)

    • Informal sporting activities

    • Play (playgrounds)

    • Structured sport (sports grounds and stadiums).

Why do we need a Recreation and Open Space Strategy?

The Strategy aims to assist Council to pursue opportunities and consider its priorities relating to recreation, sport and open space. It will include specific strategies and actions to guide the Council in its longer term planning and provision.

What is included in the Strategy?

The Council is seeking a Strategy that will provide a direction for the next ten years regarding the future provision, consolidation, planning, development and management of sporting facilities, recreation facilities and open spaces.

When did Council last update its Recreation and Open Space Strategy?

Council last review of its Recreation and Open Space Strategy was in 2007. Many of the actions within this strategy have now been completed, are underway or have become outdated.

How can I contribute to the development of the revised Strategy?
